We are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2014 Sam Bomar Memorial Scholarship Awards (a fund of West Tennessee Healthcare)
2014 $1000 Scholarship Winners
Anna Ekene Davis Tharpe Madison Academic High School Anna Ekene Davis Tharpe is a senior at Madison Academic High School. She is the daughter of Vernessa and Seigfried Tharpe. Ekene has focused her community service on the Humane Society, RIFA, and the Dream Center. Her primary extracurricular activity has been 4-H which she describes as helping educate young people and encouraging them through volunteer activities. Ekene intends to become a plastic surgeon and help accident victims. She will attend the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.		Claire Elizabeth Jaggers University School of Jackson Claire Elizabeth Jaggers attends the University School of Jackson . Claire is the daughter of Ginger and Chad Jaggers. One of her references stated that he has never heard her make a negative comment about anyone nor has he heard one spoken about her. Claire has been influenced by her trips to Haiti and her work with Haitian orphans. On her blog, she asked questions such as "What if everyone's heart was filled with the love of God?" "What if the kids in the orphanage become leaders of Haiti?" "What if there was no end to what we could do through Christ?" She would like to practice adoption law.
2014 $1000 Faith and Family Award Winner Leland Thomas Williamson, South Side High School, is the son of Tommy Williamson and the late Julie Williamson. He plans to attend Baptist College of Health Sciences to become a nurse. In his essay, Leland wrote: "When I was nine years old, my mother had a car accident in which she was paralyzed from the neck down. I helped take care of her for 6 ½ years until she passed away when I was fifteen. . . . From this experience, I know my purpose in life is nursing." Leland's references all remarked on his dedication to his family and his hard work.
Michael Congiardo In Memoriam Award $500 Jimmy Lee Owens, Madison Academic, is the son of Brenda and Jimmy Owens. He plans to attend Austin Peay State University to become a high school Spanish teacher. He sees the role of a teacher as not only providing academic support but also moral support and encouragement - traits that were shown by Mr. Congiardo in his work as an educator. Jimmy volunteered with the YMCA "Smart Moves" program, which is designed to show the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
